Vispanet

Vispanet

Introduction

Vispanet, the Virtual Space weather Application Network of Tools, is a Virtual Observatory (VO) for space weather data and models. A VO is a distributed software application: A central node (e.g. a web portal or a desktop application) retrieves data and model results from other computers (nodes) on the internet. The nodes must share the same "vocabulary", so that you can use the results together.

Vispanet nodes

The figure above is a system perspective: Users like S/C designers or operators access the Vispanet central node (a web portal), which in turn uses the common vocabulary to call upon more specialised nodes such as SPENVIS, SWENET, SAAPS, IPSAT or many others.

This ESA/ESTEC initiative started in 2009/11 and is performed by etamax space, Onera, CDPP, IRF Lund, DHConsultancy, DLR Space Systems and Solenix. We are currently in the systems engineering phase, collecting and organising user requirements and use cases for the Vispanet system.
